Osteo Arthritis of Both Knee Joints
A Male patient aged about 70 years with history of severe long standing pain of both his knee joints, difficulty in walking and climbing stairs and difficulty in getting up from his chair and pain all along his lower leg.
Physical examination and clinical findings:
On examination of both the knee joints, it was found that the patient had inflammation, pain and crepitus was positive in both the joints. Flexion was possible only to about 50* in both the joints and he could not walk freely. His pain on the legs was also unbearable.
Diagnostic tests:
X-Ray of both Knee Joints: The x-rays revealed that there was absolutely no space between the Femur bone and tibia bone, the tibial spikes were touching the lower end of femur in both the legs and the cartilage was completely destroyed. Osteophytes (Bone fragments) were present in plenty on the back side of the leg and the bones were severely osteoporotic and there was loss of calcium in the matrix.
IQ3: With the help of IQ3 we were able to see total loss of the cartilage in both the joints, bone hypertrophy of the joint margins, severe cartilage loss, chronic joint effusion, cortical irregularities and associated soft tissue changes.
Clinical Diagnosis:
Advanced Chronic Osteo Arthritis of Both Knee Joints with osteoporosis.
Treatment advised:
Marma Bandhana Chikitsa for approximately 20 sittings (Bi-weekly). The patient was advised with Marma Bandana, ayurvedic Medicinal applications, bandaging along with clinically tested ayurvedic medicines and supplements given orally and for local applications during the course of treatment only.
Efficacy of Treatment
At the end of the treatment the patients knee joint pain had reduced by about 75%, the patient’s articular index was more than 70% and was free of pain in his leg areas. The patient can lead a normal life going about his daily chores. Exercises were taught to strengthen his knee joints.
